Martin City

Martin City carries the feel of an old gateway outpost—part roadside stop, part former boomtown—set at the edge of Glacier National Park and surrounded by dense forest and mountain terrain. Originally established during the construction of Hungry Horse Dam in the 1940s, the community still holds traces of that rugged, working-class history through its modest structures, weathered facades and utilitarian layout.

Just outside town, a road follows the east side of Hungry Horse Reservoir, winding through heavily forested terrain with intermittent lake views and long stretches of undeveloped landscape. The surrounding Flathead National Forest keeps the landscape heavily wooded and undeveloped, while nearby access to the Coram Experimental Forest introduces towering old-growth western larch stands and quiet trails that turn vivid gold in autumn.

Martin City’s seasonal contrasts add texture throughout the year. In winter, Cabin Fever Days brings the area to life with events like barstool ski races, bonfires and crowds gathered along Central Avenue.
