St. Mary

Set on the Blackfeet Reservation at the eastern entrance to Glacier National Park and the beginning of Going-to-the-Sun Road, St. Mary marks the transition between prairie and alpine terrain. The community is primarily made up of lodging, dining and visitor services that support travelers entering and exploring the park. It sits along the St. Mary River beneath towering peaks that rise directly from the surrounding landscape and define the horizon in nearly every direction.

Upper and Lower St. Mary Lake stretch through the valley below the mountains, creating long water corridors framed by rocky ridgelines and forested slopes. The eastern approach to Going-to-the-Sun Road opens onto glacial valleys, alpine meadows and layered mountain.

Just south of the community, the St. Mary Overlook provides elevated perspectives across the valley, marked by a prominent tipi sculpture overlooking Glacier National Park. Summer brings a steady flow of visitors through the area, while winter leaves the community noticeably quieter beneath snow-covered peaks and wide Montana skies.
