SET THE SCENE IN

Olney

Olney

Olney is a quiet, forested community tucked between Whitefish and Eureka, where dense timber, open meadows and mountain backdrops create a distinctly remote Northern Rockies setting. Surrounded by Flathead National Forest and Stillwater State Forest, the area is composed of long stretches of winding road, thick conifer stands and minimal development.

Outdoor recreation shapes much of the region’s visual identity. Lower Stillwater Lake and Upper Stillwater Lake provide calm water settings framed by forested shorelines, while nearby trails and campgrounds offer easy access to rugged backcountry terrain. In winter, the area becomes a base for Nordic skiing, dog sledding and backcountry skiing, adding movement and seasonal atmosphere to the landscape.

Olney also carries historic Forest Service character. Stillwater State Forest—Montana’s first state forest—is headquartered here, and the nearby Stillwater Ranger Station includes original structures dating back to the 1920s. These rustic administrative buildings remain set among dense timber, gravel roads and quiet stretches of undeveloped forest.
