Rexford

Big water and open terrain define Rexford, a lakeside community along the northern edge of Lake Koocanusa, where the Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway follows the shoreline through wide-open views and long stretches of uninterrupted landscape.

The lake spreads out beneath surrounding mountains, creating long sightlines and dramatic shifts in light throughout the day. In spring, when water levels drop, the Koocanusa Sand Dunes emerge—an unexpected, sculpted landscape that introduces a stark, almost otherworldly contrast to the lake and forested hills beyond.

The Koocanusa Bridge rises high above the water, its steel span cutting across the valley and offering expansive aerial views of the lake and surrounding peaks. Below, Abayance Bay Marina provides a more contained, waterfront setting, with docks, amphitheater seating and lakeside structures that frame the shoreline.

Farther along the byway, the Little Hoodoo Trail winds through distinctive rock formations, where weathered columns and irregular shapes create a striking natural backdrop—adding another visually distinct environment within the broader Lake Koocanusa corridor.
